Cabinet Hinges - They Make Your Kitchen Complete

What’s small and metal and something you use every day? No it is not a key, but it is something that you move in a door. It is a hinge. And when remodeling your kitchen they are one thing you don’t one to forget about. Mismatched knobs and hinges would just be an eyesore and without them you would have open shelves instead of cabinets.

Down-sized by the Romans for domestic purposes such as cabinets, hinges are generally eight times stronger than the job they are doing. So it is very difficult to end up with hinges that are too small. But before you decide on the size you need you need to decide on the type or style. There are many kinds of cabinet hinges available to meet your needs. One of the most common types is a butt hinge which consists of two rectangular leaves with holes that are joined by a pin. When the door is closed, the leaves meet or butt together in the frame leaving only the pin showing. The pins of these hinges can be tipped with finials or balls for a more decorative look.

Another decorative cabinet hinge is the butterfly hinge. Similar to the butt hinge but with the flaps attached to the outside of the door. The flaps look like a butterfly when opened. These hinges range in styles from colonial to art deco and can complete your cabinets with style. If you don’t want to see the hinge, try a pivot hinge which is concealed behind the cabinet door. Or go for one of the most popular hinge styles for your kitchen cabinets; the spring-loaded hinge. So-called because of the tiny spring mounted inside, a door with this type of cabinet hinge closes by itself.

Like other cabinet hardware cabinet hinges are available in a wide variety of finishes to match you décor. So if you are going to re-do your kitchen with fifties flair go for oil-rubbed bronze cabinet hinges and knobs or pulls. Add some golden warmth with knobs, pulls and hinges in a bold brass finish. Or go for a decidedly modern look with satin nickel bar pulls and hinges.

No matter what type of cabinet hardware you are looking for the best place to shop is online. Don’t waste your time dragging yourself to every hardware and home store in town only to be disappointed by their small selection. Instead shop from the comfort of your own home and browse the largest selection and the best prices online. You’ll find hinges of all shapes, sizes and styles to meet your needs. Choose from cabinet hinges for the kitchen or your entertainment center. Choose hinges that are concealed or ones that are decorative as well as functional. As long as you match the finish and design with your other cabinet hardware your kitchen or any other room or piece of furniture with cabinets will be complete. Start With Cabinet Hardware For Your Bathroom Remodel

Once you have made the decision to remodel your bathroom, planning all the details carefully is in order.

You cannot begin to take on a task such as this without taking into account the cost of the remodel, the complete planning of the design, and the process by which all of it needs to be carried out.

You might choose to do something as easy as apply a new paint color or new cabinet hardware or you may find that redoing the entire space might be best. For the larger tasks, you might choose to change the toilet, bathtub, or add a sauna to the room. Either way, the right beginning will lead to a beautiful design in the end.

The first thing you will need to do is decide just how much you can spend on the project. It would be a shame for you to start the remodel and find that your tastes were way over budget for completion.

Your budget needs to include all the parts of the bathroom you need to change. Start by making a list of all you want to change. This will be narrowed down a bit after the next step.

Take a trip to your local hardware or home improvement store and start checking the prices of what is on your list to redo. Once you have all the price information, go home and see if any of the items on your list will need to be removed to stay within budget. You can expect to pay about $5,000 or more for a complete remodel of the bathroom.

Plan your remodeling job down to the smallest detail so no monetary surprises will arise later on.
Planning the exact design may take a little homework on your part.

If you do not have the design in your head, you may need to see about taking a look at some of the other bathroom designs available. You can use the internet to find decor ideas, the latest in cabinet hardware, and pictures to go by.

You can take a trip to specialty stores that specialize in bathroom fixtures and design. Be certain that whatever you decide to do is exactly what you want. If you rush, you can end up with a room you do not want and cannot afford to change. Plan carefully and remodel only once!

If you want to do a quick remodel and just freshen up the space, you might decide to change the color of the bathroom and the fixtures.

You may not have a budget that allows for a total remodel of your bathroom. It is more practical for you to just change out the cabinet hardware, the bathroom accessories, and the door hardware.

When remodeling your bathroom space, plan, plan, plan! Take your time to enjoy the process of designing and changing this space. You will definitely enjoy it more after it is complete. Planning your project will leave you pleased with the work you have accomplished!

How to Stay Within Your Budget and Find Great Kitchen Cabinets

What determines the cost of your kitchen cabinets? How can you save money without sacrificing quality? Here are a few things to help you make the most well-informed choices.

Set Your Budget

There are many optional features that can make a big difference in the cost of your cabinets. You can weigh the advantages of these options to get the most for your money.

Consider the value best suitable for your needs and pick the options that will make your storage space as efficient as possible. Here are some things to think about as you design your kitchen cabinet placement:

Space and Layout

Of course the amount of space you have to place your kitchen cabinets is a huge factor in determining how much you will spend. But having plenty of cabinet space is far too important not to utilize your space effectively.

The layout of your kitchen will, of course, determine how much area you have for kitchen cabinets. For example, cabinets for a U-shaped kitchen will cost more than cabinets to be placed in and L-shaped kitchen.

Choosing a stack of drawers rather than a drawer with a cabinet underneath will add to your expense. There are many ways to configure your cabinet design to provide efficiency at a price you can afford.

Construction Method

A solid dovetailed construction is one of the most durable methods of producing good quality kitchen drawers. Obviously, this will cost more than pinned particle board drawers and other less durable construction methods.

This is one place you should not skimp – your drawers will be much more durable if you go with the best construction method, and you will be much happier in the long run with solid construction.

Construction Material

You’re going to find many different materials to choose from for your cabinets. You can choose different types of wood cabinets as well as other materials for cabinet construction.
Stainless steel clad cabinets might be among your most expensive options, while one of the least expensive choices is a thin plastic laminate surface over particle board or other inexpensive woods.

High-quality wood cabinets are among the most popular choices for kitchen cabinetry, and even within the wood cabinet options, the prices vary. More exotic woods will be far more expensive than oak or pine, but there are many types of wood to consider, such as maple and cherry.

Deciding on your finish and materials will certainly affect your overall price. This is a good place to do a lot of comparison to stay within your budget and still come away with great looking cabinets.

Cabinet Doors

Should you keep it simple or do you want your cabinet doors to have more detail? Here is another area that requires decision making on your part.

You can choose a nice, simple design and end up with great looking cabinets. Adding grooves, molding or other details will increase the price with each detail you add. Inset doors will cost more than doors mounted over the frame.

Again, this is a place for a lot of comparison and compromises. Your door style creates the primary focus of your cabinets, so choose doors wisely and go with what you feel will ultimately provide the look you want. After all, this is a very long-term decision for most homeowners.

Cabinet Hardware

Choosing the hardware for your cabinets is the fun part. You have many choices in colors, styles, shapes, sizes, and finishes. Just have fun with this part.

Once you have chosen your cabinets, you can easily determine how many drawer pulls and other pieces of hardware you will need to add the finishing touch to your beautiful new kitchen cabinet design.

Weighing your options and making your choices carefully can bring you a great sense of satisfaction that you have chosen wisely and cost effectively to maintain your budget while designing a beautiful new kitchen.

Cabinet Hardware Explained - From Decorative to Functional

Today’s cabinets vary as much in style as they do in functionality. Although styles can range wildly from simple big-box manufactured face frame cabinets with slab panel doors to intricately crafted custom cabinets hewn from the hands of generations of craftsmen, some things just never change. The cabinet hardware that makes these cabinets both functional and decorative is virtually universal throughout.

Yes, there are minor differences in cabinet hardware from one style of cabinet to another, however, the major types of hardware can be found in any style or construction of cabinet. The two main types of hardware are decorative and functional.

DECORATIVE CABINET HARDWARE
Decorative hardware, sometimes referred to as surface hardware, consists of the pieces that are mounted to the outside surface of your cabinet doors and drawer fronts. They not only provide the means with which to open your cabinet doors, they also give your cabinetry that finishing touch. The various types are:

*handle pulls
*cup pulls
*knobs
*backplates
*ring, bail and pendant pulls

Handle and cup pulls are rigid and require two mounting screws to attach to the cabinet door or drawer front. Bail pulls also require two mounting screws, however, they can be rigid or swinging type bails. Knobs are just simple post-pulls that require one mounting screw. Ring and pendant pulls can be rigid or swinging and normally require one mounting screw although some may require two with a small center-to-center measurement.

The mounting hole spacing measurement is the most important measurement of a cabinet handle pull if you are replacing existing hardware. This measurement is taken from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other, thus it is called the center-to-center measurement (abbreviations include: C-C, C/C, CTC). Obviously if you are replacing existing cabinet pulls, you will need to match your new hardware center-to-center measurement with that of the holes already drilled into your cabinet doors. Common measurements are 3″, 3-1/2″, 96mm and 4″, however there are many more than just those four.

FUNCTIONAL CABINET HARDWARE
Functional hardware consists of the hardware pieces that make your cabinets do what they are suppose to do. Doors open and close, drawers slide out and back in, giving you access to the items you have inside. Basically, if your cabinets didn’t have any of this type of hardware in and on them, they would be pretty useless. These types include:
*door hinges
*drawer slides

Door hinges are simply the hinges that connect your cabinet doors to the actual cabinet but as simple as their function is, the types, sizes and options abound. The three main distinguishing types of cabinet hinges are concealed, semi-concealed and non-concealed. These all can come in a variety of opening angles, swing types (free-swinging vs. self-closing), overlay sizes, insets as well as finishes.

Drawer slides are the pieces of hardware that allow your drawers to slide in and out. They are sometimes referred to by other names such as drawer guides, drawer glides, drawer runners and drawer tracks. The three main types used on cabinets are: side-mount, side/under-mount and under-mount. These types can be further classified by the distance they allow a drawer to be opened such as 3/4 extension, full-extension or over-travel extension.

Cabinet hardware is not very complicated on the surface. It is the many options that these basic pieces come in that gets a little more in-depth, too in-depth for this simple primer on cabinet hardware.

Are you in need of some extra storage space in your bedroom, but do not have do not want another dresser or nightstand? Well, you are in luck because there are other storage options available and one of those is a hope chest, which would be a great, stylish addition to that bedroom of yours.

A hope chest has a fairly basic design and will be in the shape of a longer box, about three to four feet in length. It will either rest flat on the floor or will be supported by legs and will have a lid that covers it, which will open and close to a large storage area and will sometime have a locking option. Over the years, some modifications have been made to this design and instead of featuring just one large storage area, now you can get ones that are equipped with drawers and even cabinets.

Probably the best quality of a hope chest is that fact that it is extremely practical since you can use its storage area for hiding away a number of different items in your bedroom space. Whether you have extra bedding that needs to be stored away during the summer months, or extra clothes and shoes. It would even work well for stowing books, photo albums, and other special keepsakes that you just do not seem to have a place for. Along with storing different things in one, you could even use it as a bench in your space, like you could place it at the foot of your bed and put a cushion on it for a great place to sit down while taking on and off your shoes or just as a nice place to take a break after a long day at the office. And, one would also be a nice choice for other rooms throughout your home as well, including any guest bedroom, bathroom, even entryway, or bathroom.

Along with its practicality, a hope chest would also be a great addition any room throughout your home because it is an extremely beautiful furnishing. It gets it beauty from the lovely wood materials that it can be crafted from, all of which are available in a wide variety of finishes. Some of the woods used to make it include maple, oak, pine, and cedar while some of the different finishes available are cherry, espresso, black, antique, distressed, and just the plain wood grain if you like the simple, sophisticated look.

Each one of these materials and finishes yields a stunning furnishing that would really enhance the look of any space it is put into. You can even get ones with hand painted patterns and accents, and others that have elegant scrollwork. If you do not believe it, just hit the internet and do some comparison shopping through all the online stores.

So, if you are looking to add a little storage space to your bedroom, but do not want to go with the usual options, then a great furnishing for you is a hope chest. Both practical, and beautiful, it is a lovely selection that is sure to please.

Beautify Your Home With Curio Cabinets

Many of us wish to decorate our homes with beautiful furniture to achieve a comfortable ambiance; one that exudes a warm and inviting feeling, and makes your friends and family want to come over for parties or other gatherings. However, constantly having people over to your home can be risky for the collectibles, memorabilia, and other valuables you may have in your home. They may touch the untouchables, accidentally drop the fine china, or cause a dent on your sports trophies. So how can you keep all your valuables safe while still showcasing them? Enter Curio Cabinets.

What are Curio Cabinets?

Curio Cabinets are decorative pieces of furniture meant to store your collectibles, memorabilia, and other valuables. They are often ornately designed and well crafted. Curio Cabinets are usually distinctive pieces of furniture in many homes; they can generally be described as tall, narrow pieces, with glass doors for showcasing your valuables. Traditional Curio Cabinets are designed with the utmost detail with classic lines and decorative accents. More modernized curio cabinets tend to use straighter, sharper lines and will look great in any home with the same direction in design.

What are Curio Cabinets used for?

The most common items placed within Curio Cabinets for showcase include:

- Figurines
- Silverware
- Fine China
- Ceramics and Porcelain
- Shot Glasses
- Sports Trophies and Awards
- Valuable Toys
- Photographs
- Jewelry
- Wine and Wine Glasses
- Fine Art
- Other Sentimental Collectibles and Memorabilia

Really there is no actual definition of what goes into a Curio Cabinet. It will change from person to person, depending on what he or she feels is valuable and impressive enough to show off to guests.

Types of Curio Cabinets:

Standard Wall Curios:

- Standard wall curios are your typical curio cabinet. They are tall and narrow, normally in a squared or rectangular shape. However don’t be surprised to see dylindrical curios. With the exception of the cylindrical curios, most wall curio cabinets are going to have flat backs. The point of these is to be placed against walls, but not necessarily in corners (unless you wish to place them there).

Corner Curio Cabinets:

- Corner curio cabinets are your typical wall curio, however these must be placed in corners. Many corner curio cabinets tend to be triangular or wedge-shaped where the pointed end would go into the corner. You may also place square and rectangular cabinets in corners if you wish, though corner curios are generally a more efficient use of the space.

Miniature Curios and Console Tables:

- Miniature Curios are exactly as they sound. They are smaller version of standard wall curios, usually shorter. They tend to be better suited for compact or higher trafficked areas.

- Console Tables are similar to miniature curio cabinets (especially in size); however they take on a more traditional, four-legged table design.

Hanging Curios:

- Hanging curios are small curio cabinets that are light enough to be hung. The great thing about these curios is that most are also wall mountable.

Now that you have a good understanding of what a Curio Cabinet is and the different types, time to find the one that best suits your home. Curio Cabinets are going to add the extra beautiful brilliance that your house and collectables deserves. Whether you decide on a traditional curio cabinet or modern, just know that your home is going to look great and your valuables are safe and sound.
