3 Bowling Tips and Techniques You Can Use Today

I am going to share some bowling tips and techniques with you that you can use immediately to improve your game. There are so many ways that you can improve your bowling game, and I am going to share a few of those with you. These are three tips that should help you bowl better if you take them seriously.

The first thing that I want to share with you is that when bowling, you need to use your lower body leverage during delivery. On your last step, bend your knee to get closer to the lane and slide your foot making sure that it stays straight. You can think of it like sliding into a deep knee bend. Then, with the leg that is not sliding, move it over across from the arm you are throwing with. This will counter balance your body. You want to make sure that you keep your upper body straight when doing this. It may take a while to get down, but if practiced, you can drastically improve your game.

The next tip that I want to share with you is all about the release. Make sure that you are not squeezing the ball with your grip. Relax your thumb and come through cleanly during the release. If you don’t, you can cause your swing to veer off and you will not be able to get consistent delivery. For the best release you need to use your lower body leverage and make sure that you are close to the foul line when your release the ball. If you find that you are too far behind the foul line when you release, adjust your starting point to make up the difference. Getting close to the foul line will allow the ball to strike the lane later and conserve some energy for the pins.

The third tip and technique that I want to share is that you need to develop your own bowling style. There is no set way to do things when it comes to bowling. The important thing is to be able to develop a style that you can do over and over and get good results. If you can do that, you will be a successful bowler. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are doing something wrong when you are comfortable with your style. Let them whine when you beat them.

I hope that these bowling tips and techniques have helped you with your bowling game. Remember to always have good lower body leverage, a relaxed grip on the ball, and to develop your own style. Sure you can watch other good bowlers and see how they bowl, but every bowler will have a style that fits them best.

3 Tips for Bowling a Better Game

I am going to share with you some great tips for bowling a better game. You will start to feel more like a professional and stop feeling like a beginner. There is only so much that you can learn on your own before you feel like you don’t know where to go next. The tips that I am sharing with you will help you get past that beginner feeling and get you on track to bowling the best game possible.

Tips for Bowling – Tip 1

The first tip for bowling that I am going to share with you has to deal with is how you swing the ball. This way that you swing is very important in the game of bowling. You need to make sure that you keep your arm loose. Keep your grip relaxed in the ball making sure that you are not squeezing your fingers, especially the thumb. In order to get the best grip you ball needs to be fit to your hand. This is done so that the holes are not too big causing you to squeeze your fingers and muscle the swing. You can use inserts if you find this to be a problem.

Tips for Bowling – Tip 2

The next tip that I want to give to you is to finish up close to the foul line. You should be around six inches from the foul line after each delivery. This will allow the ball to make contact with the lane a little further down the lane conserving energy for the pins. If you find that you are too far behind the foul line at the end of your delivery, adjust your starting point so that you are closer at the end of delivery. This should improve your game quiet a bit.

Tips for Bowling – Tip 3

The last tip I want to share is that bowling is very much a mental game. You need to always be thinking about your delivery. If you make a good shot, try to plant your process in your mind so that you can do that over and over. Always think about making that perfect delivery everywhere: even off the lanes. Image the steps you take to get that next strike. Always be thinking about your game.

I hope that these tips will help improve your bowling game. Make sure that when you are on the lanes that you watch other players bowl. Look at what they do and how they are bowling if they have a good game.

Bowling for Bucks! How to Improve Your Bowling Skills and Make it to the Pros

Several years ago I was counseling a professional bowler who was having a tough time with his game and needing to get back on track. Having heard about me from a friend, he agreed to come in for some hypno-therapy sessions.

After discussing his personal traits, angers, fears, and other details surrounding his slump, I wrote a session designed specifically for him. The words that I used were precisely to help him overcome some bad habits in his form, his anxiety about poor performance, his fears surrounding getting older, and his feeling of weakening after the second game.

He taught me alot about what “perfect form” meant. We discussed in detail all of the errors bowlers generally make regarding their choices of where to stand, how to set up, changing balls, taking too long or too short to begin their approach, the number of perfect steps and footing before release, poor hand release form and improperly swinging their arm during the backswing. He told me that he could usually perform well without much preparation, but for some unknown reason he was twisting his arm and hand just before release. He told me in detail about many of his 300 games, the perfect score for a bowler. He was passionate about the sport he had been playing since he was a child. Now in his 60s and still part of the tour it was tough to compete with the younger stronger players and he lost his confidence.

We went over his entire set-up, how he wanted to look, how he wanted to feel, what the ball should look like, what he mentally needed in order to be perfect. He gave details about the lanes, if they were oiled or dry, wood or laminate, and comments that were pertinent to his successful performance.

I explained what he should expect from hypno-therapy. I would first put him into a relaxed state of being and his mind would begin to calm from the stresses of the day. He would listen to the sound of my voice and that alone. Deep inhalations and exhalations to slow his breathing began. He learned what tension in his muscles felt like. He became aware of his own heart rate and breathing, whether he was breathing from his chest or his diaphragm. He tightened every muscle in his body so that he completely understood the complete opposite, or the feeling of physical relaxation.

We then began his personalized program. “Continue with your deep breathing. Fix your eyes of a spot across the room.” He chose to focus on a butterfly in one of my pictures on the wall. He breathed in the essence of the butterfly and breathed out all tension first from his mind, then from each part of his body. As he inhaled he chose to breathe in the freedom of the butterfly.

As we continued, the muscles of his face relaxed and I noticed him cooperating more and more with each phrase. “Now concentrate only on the freedom of the butterfly. The butterfly has the ability to fly above of all of the earthly problems you are experiencing. It doesn’t have to think about HOW to fly, it just flies easily and smoothly over all obstacles.” He gently smiled as he continued to relax more and more deeply.

I brought him back to a time in his life when he performed perfectly, when he bowled a 300 game that he remembered in detail. Leading him into a deeper state of relaxation, he was completely relaxed and immersed in a true state of hypnosis. Then each detail became more and more important as he was absorbing both in mental imagery and by memory and post hypnotic suggestion each word that I was saying.

As I got to the negative habit he had somehow acquired, I repeated the following words over and over again to strongly imprint his mind and reset his technique:

“I am completely relaxed and confident each time I step into a bowling alley. I love to bowl and I am the very best bowler in the country. Each time I take out my bowling balls I know exactly which ball is best for the lane I am going to play. It doesn’t matter if the lanes are oily or dry, I have exactly what I need to play a perfect game each time. My form is perfect, my clothing feels comfortable, my shoes feel comfortable, the crowd supports me, my mind plays this tape over and over again as soon as I walk into a bowling alley. My only option is success. I remain strong and energized during and after each game I play. I can easily play ten games and feel great.

My form is perfect. My fingers fit easily and comfortably into the holes in my bowling balls. My hand and the the ball are a perfect fit. I love the feeling of holding my bowling ball, almost as much as I love to watch it roll perfectly down the aisle to the sweet spot, the pocket. The pins always cooperate as my ball comes towards them. I see the strike before my ball reaches the pins. My arm and hand remain perfectly straight in my backswing. I swing effortlessly back and follow through as my hand passes my ear my eyes remain fixed on the pocket. I hit the pocket every time I roll the ball down the alley. As soon as I set up I focus only on the pocket and my mind sees the strike happen before the ball leaves my hand. I am mentally ready, mentally strong, nothing distracts me.

As soon as I pick up my ball, I set my feet in the same spot each time. Two boards from the first dot on the right. As I look at the pins, I focus only on the pocket, no other pins exist. As I set my ball down quietly it rolls down the aisle with a memory of where to hook. The ball has a memory imprint from my hands and it knows exactly what to do. All I have to do is lay it down in the same spot. I easily hit the same spot every time, because my hand, my arm, my shoulder and my release are perfect in delivery. My muscles lock into place, straight on the back swing and the perfect and powerful release. Over and over again, one strike after the next. As simple as walking…. I love the feeling of winning. I feel happy. I am confident. I am a winner. I bowl a perfect game easily!”

After a one hour session of repeating this paragraph over and over and over again, I had apparently programmed myself unknowingly. The next evening I was participating for fun in a Pro-Am tournament at our local bowling alley. The gentleman who I was working with was also participating. Although my average was just 150, I was the surprise of the entire tournament!

Without thinking, I picked up my 12 pound ball confidently with a new relaxed sense about the game. Even my practice balls were strikes. The teams were chosen at random. Each team had one pro bowler. Mine was smiling widely as I continued throwing one strike after the next. The tournament ended with me rolling the very best games of my career; a high game of 260! My other games that night were 190 and 210, both far beyond my regular average. It was a thrill of a lifetime! Only the pro bowler and I realized what had happened and we had a good laugh about it later. He asked that I not turn pro!

If you are interested in improving your performance in any sport, or competition of any kind, you might want to research hypno-therapy and other forms of mental retainment. It could be very worth your while! This is certainly proof that success is first a THOUGHT. If you think you will…you will. If you think you can’t…you won’t. Here’s to your next success!

Supercharge Your Bowling Game

You’ve bowled enough to know you like the sport and want to get better. You listened to all the advice about bowling in a straight line and it’s served you pretty well. However, straight-line bowling leaves a lot to be desired…it’s not the most consistent way to get good shots and it leaves you at the mercy of the condition of the lane. Are there other techniques out there that are more effective? Absolutely!

What’s after the straight shot?

To supercharge your game, you’ll need to learn some more advanced techniques when throwing the ball. The speed at which you approach the shot is known as the tempo. The tempo at which you approach to bowl includes just four steps, so you want it to be right. Your tempo decides how much power your ball will have. You’ll also need to learn how to time your release depending on the shot you need to make and the conditions of the lane. And lastly, you’ll need to vary the ball you use. The right ball will pick up the pins for any given situation.

What’s your tempo?

Beginning bowlers are notorious for a slow, steady tempo. This is fine if you’re taking your first shot at the pins, but if you have a spare or a split, your tempo can make or break the shot. If you have two pins standing, a quick tempo will give you a fast, powerful ball that can really knock down the pins. It’s your best shot for picking up your frame.

Learning when to let go…

When you release the ball is the second greatest adjustment in timing you can make. Where you choose to release it, as well as if you put a spin on the ball, will allow you to aim more accurately. Getting just the right combination of the two can give you the highest scores ever and increase your average. A little extra oomph and a quick flick of the wrist will give you control of the hook, skid and speed of your ball with proper release.

Better balls for better bowlers…

What kind of ball are you using? Using the right ball for the right job means the difference between getting it right and just getting lucky! If you’ve been using one ball for your all your shots, now’s the time to consider adding a “hook” ball to your arsenal. Using a plain plastic ball as your “spare” ball is another good idea. Spare balls roll straighter for picking off the pins left standing.

Using only one tempo, release and ball may have served you well as a beginner, but as you become a serious bowler you’ll need to start varying the tempo, timing and strength of your techniques. Matched with the right ball for the right shot, and you’ll be bowling with the big boys in no time. Your bowling will be supercharged!

Why No Two Lanes Bowl The Same

Everyone who loves their sport knows that every time you play, you have to be in it for 100%. In bowling, we make sure that our technique is fine-tuned and that we always choose the best equipment we can. We have a ball for the first shot of the frame, a spare ball, and maybe even a hook ball. Whether we own the latest $250.00 state-of-the-art shoes or rent a reliable old pair form the bowling alley, we know that bowling shoes give us an edge as well. Unfortunately…or fortunately, as the case may be, there is one thing at the bowling alley that you don’t have complete control over; and that is the lane itself.

Lanes are like snowflakes…

Just like snowflakes, you’ll never find two lanes that are exactly alike. We spend most of our game figuring out and overcoming those differences, whether we realize it or not. But what makes the lanes different?

Where do you bowl? Older lanes, like older homes, have “character.” They’ll develop wear marks and divots, and if not refinished on a regular basis, will definitely cause your ball to make some unexpected moves. If the lane is damaged, it can interfere with the trajectory of your ball in a major way.

Many bowling alleys are choosing to simply cover their old, hardwood floors with a synthetic material that looks like wood instead of replacing them completely. The softer surface over worn wooden boards can impact on your ball’s performance.

The brand new bowling alleys have fully synthetic surfaces on their lanes. While they look the same as wood, they are smoother and slipperier. If you’re used to bowling on an old hardwood lane, it might take some practice to get used to the new surface.

Oil helps the ball go ‘round…

Bowling alleys use thin coats of oil to help preserve the playing surface of the lanes. The oil is applied in one of many patterns, each pattern affecting the ball in a different manner.

Sometimes the bowling alley attendant might be a little too heavy on the oil, causing the balls to slip and slide instead of grabbing hold and rolling. Too little oil, whether by overuse of the lane between oilings or too little application of oil, can cause your ball to grab hold too early and use up all its power before it reaches the back end.

Because of the imperfections in the oil-application process, even lanes within the same bowling alley will be different. The same lane will be different in the evening than when it was freshly oiled in the morning, too.

So, my “lucky” lane is not all in my head?

Chances are, your “lucky” lane is special to you because of the way its imperfections compliment your own unique bowling style. There are many reasons why no two lanes bowl the same way. Get friendly with the workers at your bowling alley, and they will be able to tell you the best lanes to bowl. They can also tell you about how the oil is applied and the best techniques to use on that particular oil pattern. Lanes that are played on more often are likely to have less, or dried out oil and should be avoided.

Of course…the easiest way to figure out what your bowling conditions are is to take advantage of the practice round before the scoring starts! With a little know how, you can make any lane your “lucky” lane.

Take Advantage Of Your Center Of Gravity When Bowling

Could your score use improvement?

Here you are, at last! The roar of balls screaming down polished wooden lanes, the thunder of pins toppling, the delicious fragrance of the cafe and cheers heralding the triumph of a teammate… intense!

You’ve bowled enough to know that it’s a serious sport. Closing your eyes, holding your breath and hoping for the best as you hurl a house ball towards the waiting pins is not your best choice…and you know it.

But just how does that “pro” in the next lane over make his bowling ball do those awesome tricks?

His ball screams from one side of the lane to the other, only to come out of nowhere, right into that sweet spot and “STRIKE!” again and again.

The answer is simple. By taking advantage of the ball’s center of gravity, he gains incredible control over how his ball moves down the lane.

How does the center of gravity work?

Out of all the factors that can affect how a bowling ball moves down the lane, the center of gravity is the one that can make the biggest difference to the beginning bowler. Look at the balls in the pro shop. You will notice a small, off-color dot. This mark denotes the center of gravity on that ball. Just beneath this spot are a couple of ounces of extra weight, which allow the ball to roll straight when the finger holes have been drilled. The ball would wobble down the lane without this extra weight.

Clever bowlers realized that by drilling the holes slightly off of the center of gravity, the ball would be heavier on one side, shifting the center of gravity to that side. The ball would react differently when thrown, hooking to one side or the other, ensuring better control of the ball and hitting more pins, depending on the placement of the grip holes. Amazing!

How can you take advantage of the center of gravity when bowling?

Your local pro shop can help. When you go to purchase your bowling ball, simply have your pro watch you bowl. He has the experience to know just how much “off center” to drill your ball depending on where you stand, how strong you are, the weight and makeup of the ball you choose, how you throw and whether you are right or left handed. He will know just what you need. And the best part… Most shops will drill for free when you purchase your ball!

Taking advantage of your center of gravity is the first step on the path to become a serious bowler. The difference in having a ball with a center of gravity set just for you makes the single biggest difference to a beginning bowler and will help unleash your potential…taking you that next step in your bowling performance. With bigger scores to prove it!

How To Choose A Bowling Ball At The Alley

What is the tool that will make the single biggest difference in your bowling game? Your ball, of course! If you’re just starting out, you may not have your own ball. Luckily, the bowling alley has many “house” balls to choose from. They’re the balls that fill the racks around the walls of the bowling alley, and they’re free to use.

Light Ball or Heavy Ball?

Bowling balls usually range in weight from 10 to 16 pounds. Many alleys do have children’s balls that weigh 6 to 8 pounds, but they aren’t heavy enough to be useful to an adult-sized bowler.

Most beginning bowlers are comfortable with a 10 or 12 lb. ball. While it might make you feel macho to hurl a 16-pounder down the lane, if it’s too heavy for you to throw comfortably a minimum of 20 times in the span of half an hour, it’ll be too hard to control. How macho will you look throwing gutter balls, or worse yet…dropping the ball?

However, if your ball is too light, it won’t have the power to knock the pins down. A light ball thrown by a strong person has little power and tends to bounce down the alley. However, a small woman may feel most comfortable with an 8 or 10 pound ball to start.

House balls are free to use, so consider selecting 2 of different weights. You will find the weight engraved on the outside of the ball.

Fits Like a Glove…

The grip of the ball is very important. If the finger holes are too tight your fingers can get stuck, if they are too loose, you could have a hard time keeping hold of the ball.

Check the position of the finger holes as well. Are they too close together or too far apart? Your fingers should slide in and out comfortably, without feeling cramped or stretched out.

Beauty is Only Skin Deep…

Take a good look at the outside of the ball. It should be smooth and shiny, free of pits, chips, cracks or scratches. If your ball is damaged, it won’t roll smoothly down the lane or go where you want it. Many house balls have these flaws, but if you’re careful you can usually find one in good condition.

Have a Ball

Of your own, that is! The best way to be certain that you have the right ball for you is to purchase your own ball. The pro shop in your bowling alley will have many choices, and the folks at your pro shop will be able to help you select just the right ball and drill your finger holes for a custom fit.

Whether you choose to use a house ball or buy your own, take into consideration the weight of the ball vs. your physical strength, the size and width of the finger holes and the condition of the outside of the ball. By selecting the right ball for your size and strength, you’ll give yourself a distinct advantage on the lanes.

The Top Ten Bowling Techniques To Improve Your Score

Bowling is one of the best ways to improve fitness and coordination while having fun with your family and friends. It’s a lot more than simply throwing a heavy ball down a long corridor…it’s one of the most complicated and competitive sports around. By learning to master the top-ten techniques of bowling, you’ll gain confidence, have more fun, and beat the competition!

The top 10 bowling techniques:

1. Have perfect Posture

In bowling, posture counts! Keep your head up, looking straight at your target. Your shoulders should remain square to the foul line, especially through the swing.

2. Grip the ball properly

If you use a house ball, make sure the thumbhole is loose fitting. The thumb frequently swells a little during bowling and if you’re forcing your fingers into the holes before you bowl, they’re likely to get stuck! If you have your own ball, have your pro shop custom drill your finger holes. If your thumb routinely swells, wrapping it in bowler’s tape can help. If your hands sweat, be sure to carry a towel to wipe them on and then dust your hands with a little rosin. If you have a hard time gripping the ball, your pro shop can insert grips into the finger holes.

3. Remember where you are

If you’re right handed, a good place to start is 2 arrows right of the middle. If you’re left handed, start 2 arrows to the left of center. Adjust your position right or left after you have bowled a couple of balls, depending on where your ball ended up.

4. Focus on your target

Decide where you’re going to aim. If it’s your first ball, aim to bowl just to the right of the 1 (front) pin if you’re right handed or to the left of it if you’re left handed.

5. Breathe

Relax yourself by taking three slow, deep breaths. It’s common to feel anxious before bowling… but the calmer you are, the more control you will have over your ball.

6. Smooth moves

The way you carry yourself to bowl decides the speed and power of your ball. Position yourself so you will take four consistently paced steps to throw the ball.

7. Slow down!

One of the most common traits beginning bowlers have in common is to rush. It’s important to have some speed to deliver the ball correctly, but too much speed is the #1 reason for both gutter balls and 7-10 splits in beginning bowlers!

8. Maintain your balance

Be sure to stay upright and focused on your target as you approach the foul line. Keep your shoulders square as you use your leg as a counterweight to keep your balance during the release.

9. Release the ball

Keeping your arm slightly bent at the elbow, retract your arm behind your body, cradling the ball in your hand. Keep a smooth straight arc from back to front. Be careful of arcing around your body and back…that’s a common habit in many new bowlers! At the low point of your swing, release the ball. A relaxed arm and wrist make for an effective shot!

10. Follow through

Keep your target in sight and your arm continuing its arc forward even after the ball has been released. Just “letting the ball go” and pulling your arm back will cause the ball to roll off-course.

The most important thing to remember when learning to bowl is to have FUN! By learning proper bowling techniques you will make the game much more enjoyable for yourself and for those who bowl with you.
